Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 3, 2026 · Updated: October 4, 2026 (barcode scanning, voice and photo logging)
The short version
- No account, no sign-up, no ads, no tracking.
- Your protein log stays on your iPhone. We don't have servers that receive it.
- When you scan a barcode, only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts to look up the product.
- When you log a meal by photo, that one photo is analysed by AI and not stored.
- We don't sell, rent or share your personal information.
- You can export or delete your data in the app at any time.
This policy explains how the Protein Tracker app for iPhone ("the app", "we", "us") handles your information. By using the app you agree to this policy.
1. Information stored on your device
To work, the app stores the following only on your device:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Answers from setup: first name (optional), body weight, goal weight, goal, age range, training frequency, diet, meals per day, habits and challenges | To calculate your daily protein target and personalise suggestions and reminders |
| Your food log: foods, amounts, protein, date and time | To show your progress, history, trends, streaks and achievements |
| Saved meals, favourites, challenge progress and app settings | To make logging faster and remember your preferences |
This information never leaves your device. It is not sent to us or to any third party.
2. Information we collect
We don't keep personal data. The app has no analytics, no advertising or tracking SDKs, no crash-reporting services of its own, and no account system. We do not collect identifiers, location, contacts, health records or usage data.
The only thing our server stores is a count of photo requests per IP address per day, used to prevent abuse; these counts are deleted automatically after about a day and are never linked to you.
If you choose to share diagnostic data with app developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may provide us with anonymous crash reports under Apple's own privacy policy.
3. Features that use iOS services
Reminders
If you turn on reminders, they are scheduled locally on your device by iOS. Their content (for example, how many grams you have left) is calculated on your device.
Widgets
Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets read today's numbers (protein eaten, target, streak and first name) from storage shared between the app and its widget on your device.
Barcode scanning
When you scan a barcode (or type one in), the app sends only the barcode number over an encrypted connection to Open Food Facts, a free, public, non-profit food database, to get the product's name, protein content, serving size and photo. No other information about you or your log is sent. Like any website, Open Food Facts receives your device's IP address with the request; see the Open Food Facts privacy policy. Products you scan, and products you add yourself, are then saved on your device so later scans work offline.
The camera is used only to read barcodes while the scanner is open. Camera images are processed on your device and are never stored or sent.
Voice logging
When you log by voice, your speech is converted to text by iOS on your iPhone (the app only uses on-device speech recognition), and the foods you mention are matched on your device too. No audio or text is sent to us or to anyone else. The microphone is only used while you are recording.
Export and sharing
If you export your log as a CSV file, the file is created on your device and only goes where you choose to send it.
4. AI photo logging
When you choose to log a meal by photo, and only then:
- a reduced copy of that photo (about 1024 pixels) is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, hosted on Cloudflare, which forwards it to OpenAI to estimate the foods and protein;
- it is used only to produce that estimate, is not stored after processing, and is not used to identify you, for advertising, or to train models;
Requests are sent with storage turned off, so OpenAI does not retain the photo or use it for training (see the OpenAI API data usage policy). Our server does not save photos or log their content; it keeps only daily request counts per IP address, which expire after about a day, to prevent abuse. Typing, searching and voice logging always stay on your device.
5. Purchases
In-app purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple. We never receive your name, Apple ID, or payment details. The app only learns from Apple whether Protein Tracker Pro is active on your account.
6. Your rights and choices
- Access and export: Settings → Your data → Export my log (CSV).
- Correction: edit any entry, your goal and your profile in the app at any time.
- Deletion: Settings → Your data → Delete all entries, or delete the app to remove everything it stored.
- Notifications: turn reminders off in the app or in iOS Settings.
Because we don't hold your data on our servers, there is nothing for us to delete on our side. If you live in a region with data protection laws (such as the EU/UK GDPR or US state privacy laws), you can still contact us with any request and we will respond.
7. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
8. Security
Your data is protected by your iPhone's built-in security, including device encryption when you use a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID.
9. Health disclaimer
Protein Tracker is a tracking tool for general wellness, not medical, nutritional or dietary advice. Protein values are typical estimates. Talk to a healthcare professional before changing your diet, especially if you have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are under 18.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, we will update this page and the effective date above, and the in-app policy will be updated with the app.
